AVEIRO SUBMITS ITS BID TO BE EUROPEAN CAPITAL OF CULTURE 2027

The preparation of this bid began in 2019, with the drafting of the Strategic Plan for Culture 2030. This was followed by an extended consultation and participation process, which involved not only the cultural and creative sector of Aveiro, but also other activity sectors, from education to health, environment, tourism or innovation, as well as the communities of the city and region.

During this journey, challenges, wishes and needs were identified, strategies, partnerships and priorities were established and projects were designed on a local, regional and international scale, with a view to laying the foundations for a more sustainable, competitive and attractive city and region on a European scale, which finds its transforming asset in Culture.

The next step will be the audition with an international jury in the first quarter of 2022. From this meeting will emerge a selection of candidate cities that will proceed to the next phase of evaluation. The final decision on the Portuguese city chosen as European Capital of Culture 2027 will be known in early 2023.

Until the jury’s decision, the candidature of Aveiro to become the European Capital of Culture 2027 will continue its work, developing a set of actions that intend to ensure a growing mobilisation and involvement of all sectors of society around this ambitious project.

The candidacy of Aveiro to be the European Capital of Culture 2027 is promoted by the Municipality of Aveiro together with the Intermunicipal Community of Aveiro Region (CIRA), Aveiro University, and AIDA CCI – Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Aveiro District. The Honorable Committee of the Candidacy, presented in November 2020, is presided by the former European Commissioner Carlos Moedas.
